Historical Spots

·         The name Santorini first apperared originally on the “Geography of the Arab Erdizi. During the Latin occupation, was named the largest of the islands.

·    After the terrible eruption of the 17th century, the island of Santorini inhabited in late 13th b.c-.early 12th.  In the 9th century, Spartans from Sparta led byThera, came to the island and founded the colony in Mesa Vouno. Around 630 BC,   sailors from Thera,  founded in North Africa, Cyrene.

·         Santorini Christianized in the 3rd century by the first bishop Dioscorus.

·         In 1207 with the onset of Latin, founded in the Cyclades, Aegean Duchy under Marco Sanudo. Santorini is granted to Varotsis where together with other Latin conquerors create the castles of the island, due to the parallel increase of pirate action.

·         The first official annexation of the island to the Ottoman Empire in 1536 is due to the occupation of the island by Barbarossa, but in effect until 1770, Santorini passes between various conquerors. With the Treaty of Küçük Kainardji (1774) the Russians withdrew from the Aegean creating the conditions that contributed to the economic and cultural development of the islands., The most important is the development of commercial shipping and the cultural interaction of the rest of the world to the island of Santorini

·         Some of the points that characterize the 19th century in Santorini: the creation of the Economic Chamber, the booming shipping Thera, creating new industrial units, the building of many churches, volcanic eruptions and their consequences.

·         the 20s century is characterized by the historical events of Greece (refugees , A and World War II , etc. ), but all three eruptions ( 1925 , 1939-40 , 1950) . From then on there are two basic periods until the surge of interest of the island in the 20th century. One refers to the earthquake of 1956 and the other to the advent of Professor Marinatou in Santorini. It was July 9, 1956 , 5:30 am when two earthquakes 7.5 and 6.9 conc. . In terms of social structure , the great earthquake of Santorini 1956, was the main reason to change the nature of the island, forced to move to Athens and Piraeus because of the great destruction of buildings , rural areas , etc. , internal transfers and creation of new villages, and in general almost holistic rapprochement society Santorini led to basically tourist development of the island, while a lesser level of development of agricultural cultivation rocking the island causing major damage . Over 2000 houses being damaged , and over 50 to 60 people are killed. In terms ofsocial structure, the great earthquake of Santorini 1956,was the main reason to change the nature of the island, forced to move to Athensand Piraeus because of the great destruction of buildings, rural areas, etc., internal transfers and creation of new villages,and in general almost holistic rapprochement society Santorini led to basically tourist development of the island,while a lesser level of development of agricultural crop.
